Subject: 1001 English Prefixes - a nifty book
Date: 24 Feb 1995 13:59:43 -0500
Here is an interesting little book "1001 Affixes and their meanings".
While researching for ways to teach 2nd-3rd graders vocabulary, I found
this little useful book. It is a concise compilation of all common
suffixes, prefixes and inflections. It gives the meaning of the root and
then word examples. Such as suffix - cade means parade, such in words
cavalcade, motorcade, etc.
The book is organized along the three sections, prefixes, suffixes and
inflections (inflection is used to form the past participle of a verb,
such as "en" in words like taken, given, etc. or "ern" as in southern,
eastern.) What is nice is that it helps one to see the structure behind
english language which often seems so without logical structure,
particularly to a student. For those of us who never realized the
connection between words "lucrative" and "filthy lucre", or just want to
have a nice reference for tools of literacy development, I this book is
great.
The publisher is Leonardo Press. Their address is Box 1326M, Camden,
Maine, 04843, Phone 207-236-8649. Price is $14.95.
This publisher also has other literacy books such as "the Day-to-Day Way
to Spelling Mastery", "1001 Homonyms and Their Meanings" and "Spelling
Keys to 1001 words from 10 Latin-Based Roots" and "Spelling Keys to 1001
words from 10 Greek-Based Roots", "Spelling Keys to 1001 words from 10
Endo-European-Based Roots" and "Spelling Keys to 1001 words from 10
Middle-English Roots" You can ask them for their catalog.
I hope some of you will find this information of interest.
